On Tuesday May 29th, Metrotown residents, many of whom are BCGEU members, will rally outside of the Burnaby city hall to protect their homes ahead of a public hearing that will determine the fate of this plan.
The rally will start at 6:15pm outside of the Burnaby City Hall. After the rally, we will go into the city hall hearing to call on the city to stop the Metrotown demovictions!
Burnaby Demovictions Rally
When: Rally - 6:15pm / hearings - 7pm
Where: Burnaby City Hall
(4949 Canada Way, Burnaby)
Burnaby has a rental vacancy of under 1 percent and is the third most expensive place in Canada to rent after Vancouver and Toronto.
Despite this, the Burnaby city council is considering allowing the demolition of 211 more units of affordable rental housing in the Metrotown area to make way for more luxury condos. This will put more pressure on the rental market, increase rents and displace hundreds of families from their homes.
This event is being organized by ACORN and will be held in the unceded Coast Salish territory.
