Earlier this month renters won a major victory when the BC government capped the allowable rent increases to the rate of inflation. But, the reality is that Burnaby still faces one of the worst rental market crisis in Canada thanks to the mass demovictions the current city government has overseen since 2011.
Burnaby has lost more rental units than any other jurisdiction in the lower mainland. This has led to the displacement of thousands of renters, it has reduced the vacancy rate to an all-time low and has made Burnaby the second most expensive place to rent in BC.
As a union, we have taken a strong stance on this issue as it is affecting hundreds of our members as well as workers across the city. Over the past few months we have worked together with ACORN on a series of workshops and actions to fight the ongoing demovictions.
Next Thursday, October 11th, Acorn is hosting a workshop on how people can take action against demovictions on and before the municipal election, and we'd like you to join us.
Anyone is welcome!
