Metro Vancouver is facing the most acute affordability crisis in our history. In response, most municipalities, along with the provincial government, are investing in and incentivizing the construction of new rental units to meet demand.
One major exception is Burnaby. While most of the region is increasing its rental supply to meet the needs of the region, Burnaby is one of only two municipalities, including White Rock, losing more rental units than they’re building.
In fact, 200 rental units are slated to be demolished in the Metrotown area in the coming years to make way for luxury condos. This is on top of the over 700 units that have already been demolished since 2010.
On Tuesday June 26 at 7pm, the Burnaby city council will hold a hearing on the fate 87 rental units slated to be demolished. BCGEU Executive VP Kari Michaels will be speaking at these hearings and joining other community groups who will be rallying outside of City Hall starting at 6:30pm to call for an end to these demovictions.
To save these units we need to show council that our communities will not stand idle while affordable rentals are demolished to make way for luxury condos. Please join Kari and other Affordable BC signers next Tuesday at 6:30pm to take a stand with Metrotown residents.
Please RSVP so we know how many people to expect.
